ORANGE COUNTY

Paul Arteta

Serving as Sheriff Since 2023

Sheriff Paul Arteta has served the Orange County community with unwavering dedication for over three decades, culminating in his election as Sheriff in November 2022. His career began in 1992 as a Corrections Officer, quickly advancing to Deputy Sheriff of the Criminal Division in December 1994. This foundational experience provided him with a comprehensive understanding of law enforcement, having been assigned to every division within the Sheriff’s Office.

A true leader and innovator, Sheriff Arteta was a founding member of both the Orange County Deputy Sheriff PBA and the Orange County Drug Task Force. His exceptional commitment to combating crime was further highlighted during a highly successful five-year obligation to the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, an assignment for which he was recognized with the esteemed True American Heroes Award.

Since taking office on January 1, 2023, Sheriff Arteta has demonstrated remarkable leadership and a clear vision for the future of the Sheriff’s Office. In an unprecedented three years, he has successfully achieved re-accreditation for both the Corrections and Patrol Divisions, and, notably, secured the office’s inaugural Civil Accreditation – an achievement reflecting exceptional standards and held by only a select few Sheriff’s Offices across New York State. Under his guidance, significant safety enhancements have been implemented in his correctional facility, safeguarding both inmates and staff. He also pioneered the county’s first “Fly-Car” program, significantly improving emergency medical response times. Sheriff Arteta’s collaborative approach is a cornerstone of his administration, actively fostering joint efforts with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to create a unified and effective public safety network for Orange County.

Academically accomplished, Sheriff Arteta is a distinguished graduate of the FBI National Academy (248th session) and earned a Master’s Degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety from the University of San Diego in 2020. A long-time resident of Orange County, he is a dedicated family man, married with three children and one grandchild.
