Sheriff Michael J. Amato joined the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in 1979 as a part time deputy working corrections and road patrol. In 1982 he was hired full time as a deputy assigned to corrections. Later that same year he was transferred to road patrol. June 1987 he was promoted to investigator / evidence officer a position he held until April 1992 when he was promoted to undersheriff. He held that position until October 1997 when he became acting sheriff. He was appointed by Governor George Pataki in May of 1998 as Sheriff. He is currently serving his fifth term in office as elected Sheriff.
Education / Training
The Sheriff is a graduate of the 189th Session of the FBI National Academy, the National Institute of Corrections and numerous other police and corrections schools.
Honors and Achievements
He currently serves as Trustee to the Sheriffs’ Association and is a Past President of the Sheriffs’ Association.
