Sheriff Gerace began his career with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office as a seasonal Navigation Deputy. He was appointed a full-time Deputy Sheriff in 1979 and was assigned as the first full-time Crime Scene Investigator for the agency. He was promoted to Technical Sergeant in 1989 where he supervised the Crime Scene Division.
Education / Training
Sheriff Gerace earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Jamestown Community College, a Bachelor's Degree in Police Science from Mercyhurst College, and a Masters Degree in Administration from Alfred University. He is a graduate of the National Sheriffs’ Institute where he was elected President of his class.
Honors and Achievements
Sheriff Gerace is a past President of the NYS Sheriffs’ Association. He was appointed to the State 911 Board and serves as the Chairman of the 911 Committee for the NYS Sheriffs’ Association. He is an active volunteer and serves on the Chautauqua Opportunities Board of Directors and President of the Chautauqua Children’s Safety Education Village. He was appointed to the SWN Advisory Council by Governor David Patterson.
Sheriff Gerace resides in West Ellicott with his wife Gina and their seven children: Andrew, Thomas, Elizabeth, Joseph, Jacob, Michael and Mary. He coaches youth hockey, soccer and baseball.
